Dance Classes

DANCE

I've spent over a decade in my first performance art love: ethnic dance. After my film and acting degree at NYU, I went on to produce and direct an experimental ethnic dance and theater troupe Chovexani. Below are all of the dance forms I went through in that crazy decades plus of performing!

Middle Eastern Folk Dance
This is the dance form I have the most extensive background in. This is traditional North African folk dance. Consider it a nice mix of Moroccan djumlah, Raqs Sharki and Beledi of Egypt, debke of Lebanon, and other such dances. If you are interested in learning about the basics of such folk dance, this is your ticket!
$10-$15/hour

Middle Eastern Cabaret
Known in some circles as Raqs Sharqi, this is what also is commonly refered to as bellydance. Learn the proper hip, arm, and chest movements in this culturally proper class. You will learn some beginning combinations to bellydance techniqe.
$10-$15/hour

Tribal Basics
American Tribal Style is a combination of many forms of ethnic dance, from those of North Africa, to India, to tribes of Asia. The costuming and movements mimic many of these and involve cues of a group of dancers, which tell them what move is next. We will go through various stances, combinations, and cues to learn classic tribal style
$10-$15/hour

Double Veils

A specialty of mine (see above pic), this involves learning the use of the veil in middle Eastern dance, a dance form actually brought about by European skirt dances. We will learn how to master the double veil, then do this with two veils.
Note: there is some spinning involved with this class, and is best avoided by people with inner ear issues.

Flamenco 101
Flamenco is a wonderful amalgamation of olden Spanish/European dances mixed with tons of Gypsy influences. Learn the proper stance, foot stomping/patterns, arm and finger uses for true flamenco expression!
$15/hour

East Indian Dance 101 (coming soon)
Indian dance and hand movement has influenced various dance forms around the world, including Flamenco. We will be focusing on both Odissi and Bharat Natyam dances, two very different styles of Indian dance. These involve particular stances, arm, head, hip, and leg movements (not to mention facial expressions!). These will all be explored and explained in this unique class
